The American Society of Naturalists announces the first annual ASN Student Research Awards, which support research by student members that advances the goals of the society.
Eligibility for submission
1. Must be a member of the American Society of Naturalists.
2. Must hold a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
3. Must have passed to candidacy in a Ph.D. program (or equivalent).
4. Must be at least one year from completing Ph.D.
5. Cannot have received this award previously.
Application Materials
1. 2-page proposal (references not included in the 2-page limit).
a. 11-point font, 6 lines/inch minimum line spacing, and 1” margins on 8.5”x11” paper equivalent.
b. Research must address a major conceptual issue in ecology, evolution or behavior.
c. Projects on all types of research (i.e., laboratory, field, theory) are encouraged.
d. Proposals will be judged on originality, strength and significance of the questions being addressed, prospects for significant results, and the match between the proposed research and the ASN mission.

3. Short Curriculum Vitae (maximum of 2 pages)
4. Statement from Ph.D. supervisor
a. Verification that applicant meets all eligibility requirements involving Ph.D. degree program status (i.e., 2-4 from Eligibility of Submission section above).
b. Recommendation supporting the research proposed by the student (1 page maximum).
5. All materials should be compiled into one pdf file and submitted to the Chair of the Evaluation committee via e-mail.

Evaluation
• Deadline for submission of all materials: 31 January 2012.
• The evaluation committee will consist of three senior ASN members and two graduate students (chosen from among recent award winners and executive council representatives) appointed by the ASN President. Each proposal will be reviewed by at least two members.
• The committee will choose 6 of the proposals to receive the awards, and direct the Treasurer of ASN to make the awards.
• Award decisions will be made by 1 March 2012.
Award
• $2,000 check to the candidate.
• The ASN asks that the candidate send a brief (1-page) report on how the money helped sponsor their research when it is done and acknowledge this support in all publications in which the research appears.
• ASN will publish an announcement of the award winners in the American Naturalist.
